Be rooted and grounded.
What does that mean?
Here is Ephesians 3:17-19 in two different versions
“so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”
“so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Context: Paul is praying for spiritual strength for the people of Ephesus. This prayer was for empowerment of the Spirit within the church to rise up in strength. The roots for this strength is love. Paul is praying that the people could deeply & thoroughly understand God’s love and it’s neverending lengths for the church. The source of the strength, enabled by the Spirit, is love.
So what does being rooted and grounded in love mean? It means we grasp our identities as God’s children. We understand our place here on Earth as only temporary and it is not to be self serving. We are to be bringing more glory to God through our relation with Him and our actions.
Being rooted and grounded means we have built unwavering truth in which we stand on. We can not fully serve God if we sway with what the world says. When the storms come and the wind blows can we still say with great confidence that we are God’s? That His love is enough for us?
It is safe to say our Christian lives are motivated, supported and established in Love. So being Rooted & Grounded in love, faith and God, is the goal.
